Is Quetiapine legal in Australia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Quetiapine is a prescription-only (Schedule 4, Poisons Standard) medicine, not a controlled drug: Seroquel, Seroquel XR and generics are entered on the ARTG by the TGA and quetiapine is not a Schedule 8 controlled drug or otherwise prohibited.
Consequences if caught
Quetiapine attracts no controlled-drug penalty; supply of a Schedule 4 medicine without a prescription is a state poisons-law offence, not a narcotics-trafficking offence.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed as an atypical antipsychotic for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder; sedative misuse and diversion are noted in custodial settings but it remains a Schedule 4 medicine.
Documentation
Seroquel and numerous quetiapine generics are ARTG-registered prescription medicines; travellers carry them lawfully with a prescription.
