Is Memantine legal in Australia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Memantine is a prescription-only (Schedule 4, Poisons Standard) medicine, not a controlled drug: it is entered on the ARTG by the TGA and is not a Schedule 8 controlled drug or otherwise prohibited.
Consequences if caught
Memantine attracts no controlled-drug penalty; supply of a Schedule 4 medicine without a prescription is a state poisons-law offence, not a narcotics-trafficking offence.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for moderate-to-severe Alzheimer's disease.
Documentation
Ebixa and numerous memantine generics are ARTG-registered prescription medicines; travellers carry them lawfully with a prescription.
