Is Kratom legal in Ireland?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Kratom is controlled in Ireland through its alkaloids — mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine are Schedule 1 controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Regulations; whole-leaf Mitragyna speciosa is caught because it contains them, so production, supply and possession are offences.
Consequences if caught
Schedule 1 controlled-drug offences: unlawful possession, supply and production are criminal under the Misuse of Drugs Acts.
If prescribed or medical
No lawful medical route — the alkaloids are Schedule 1 (no recognised medical use), so there is no prescription pathway.
Documentation
No lawful personal-import route for a Schedule 1 controlled drug.
