Legality · Khat

Is Khat legal in Brunei?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Controlled. ALKALOID NAMED: cathinone is a Class A drug in the First Schedule of the Misuse of Drugs Act (Cap. 27); the Catha edulis plant is not named. Mechanism: NAMED (alkaloid); plant grey. Below tier: the mandatory-death trafficking presumptions are drug-specific (heroin 15g, meth 50g, cocaine 30g, opium 1.2kg) and exclude cathinone, so khat has no weight route to capital.
Consequences if caught
Singapore-style zero tolerance; khat is a controlled Class A drug but sits outside the capital threshold list — serious non-capital exposure.
If prescribed or medical
Khat is traditional plant material with no recognised medical use and no lawful prescription route.
Documentation
No lawful personal-import route; leaf caught via its Class-A cathinone content.
