Is Ketamine legal in Indonesia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Regulated as a controlled medicine ('Obat-obatan Tertentu' / certain-medicines under BPOM regulation) — NOT a narcotic (narkotika) under Law No. 35/2009; a proposal to reclassify it as psikotropika had not yet been enacted as of confirmation.
Consequences if caught
Illegal distribution or possession is handled under health/pharmacy law (Law 36/2009) with imprisonment and fines; because ketamine is outside the Golongan I narcotics list, the capital penalty under Law 35/2009 does NOT apply to it.
If prescribed or medical
Available as a controlled medicine through licensed medical channels.
Documentation
Original prescription stating your name, the medication, dosage, and purpose; a doctor's letter; original packaging; declare on the customs form. Prescriptions for more than 14 days may not be honoured. Foreign origin or ignorance of the law is not a defence, and the zero-tolerance regime applies equally to foreigners.
