Is GBL legal in Switzerland?

- GBL (gamma-butyrolactone) is named on the narcotics schedules — it is listed in the Verordnung des EDI über die Verzeichnisse der Betäubungsmittel (BetmVV-EDI, SR 812.121.11) as an ester of GHB — but it is expressly EXEMPT from control when used industrially; non-industrial (private/human) use falls under the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BetmG).
- Consequences if caught
- Private possession or use of GBL as a GHB prodrug is a BetmG narcotics offence, while industrial handling is exempt; trafficking it for consumption is prosecuted as narcotics dealing.
- If prescribed or medical
- Not a medicine as GBL; it is a controlled industrial solvent whose industrial-use exemption is written into the schedule entry itself — the clearest statutory form of the industrial carve-out.
- Documentation
- Industry uses GBL lawfully under the schedule exemption; acquiring it for ingestion is controlled and punishable under the BetmG.
