Is Ephedrine legal in Netherlands?

- Regulated as a chemical PRECURSOR (1988 UN Convention Table I — a methamphetamine precursor), NOT as a scheduled narcotic; pure ephedrine is a Category 1 scheduled substance under the Wet voorkoming misbruik chemicaliën (WvMC). Explicitly NOT under the Opium Act.
- Consequences if caught
- Illegal handling/diversion of a Category-1 precursor is an economic offence (WvMC + Wet op de economische delicten), separate from Opiumwet drug offences.
- If prescribed or medical
- Also a pharmacy/prescription decongestant-bronchodilator medicine subject to sales limits; carry documentation for a personal supply.
- Documentation
- For Schengen travel, carry a Schengen certificate issued via the CAK (valid 30 days, covering up to 4 Schengen countries); for non-Schengen travel, carry an English-language medical certificate (legalised, valid 1 year). Keep medicines in original packaging in your hand luggage.
