Is Crack Cocaine legal in Iran?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Crack is the freebase (base) form of cocaine and has no separate legal identity in Iran: it is controlled AS cocaine under the Anti-Narcotics Law of 1988 (amended 2017), whose schedule covers cocaine, its salts and preparations and thus reaches the base/freebase form. The capital threshold is measured by weight of cocaine and carries over to crack, so trafficking, producing or selling more than 2 kg of cocaine is death-eligible whether powder or base. (Note: Iran's 'crack' street term denotes a heroin derivative, but freebase cocaine remains controlled as cocaine.)
Consequences if caught
Trafficking, producing or selling more than 2 kg of crack (as cocaine) carries the death penalty; armed or ringleader involvement is death-eligible regardless of quantity.
If prescribed or medical
Cocaine has no recognised therapeutic use in Iran; the crack/freebase base has no medicinal preparation and cannot be prescribed.
Documentation
No prescription documentation exists for crack/freebase cocaine.
