Is Buprenorphine legal in Australia?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a Schedule 8 (Controlled Drug) medicine under the Poisons Standard — the same schedule as methadone but with a greater safety margin: Suboxone film can be prescribed by any doctor for up to 10 patients without extra training (lighter handling than methadone).
Consequences if caught
Possessing a Schedule 8 medicine without authority is an offence under state law; trafficking is heavily penalised.
If prescribed or medical
Prescribed for opioid-replacement treatment (about 75% in primary care), with supervised dosing then takeaways; long-acting injectable buprenorphine is available.
Documentation
The Traveller's Exemption allows a 3-month supply carried with a prescription or doctor's letter; confirm any state permit.
