Is Barbiturates legal in Italy?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 14, 2026
Legal status
Barbiturates are listed in the 'Tabella dei medicinali' of DPR 309/90 — a prescription-controlled psychotropic class transposing the 1971 schedules (secobarbital/pentobarbital/amobarbital from Schedules II–III, phenobarbital/barbital from Schedule IV).
Consequences if caught
Personal-use possession is administrative (art. 75); dealing is criminal (art. 73, roughly 4–6 years for the 'lieve entità' minor tier).
If prescribed or medical
Phenobarbital (Gardenale, Luminale) is prescribed as an antiepileptic (a WHO Essential Medicine); the sedative-hypnotic barbiturates are largely withdrawn.
Documentation
Carry the Schengen Article 75 certificate and your prescription.
