Is Barbiturates legal in Jordan?

- Barbiturates are scheduled psychotropic prescription medicines under Jordan's Drug Law No. 11 of 1988 (as amended by Law No. 54 of 2006) — a prescription-controlled class transposing the 1971 Convention.
- Consequences if caught
- Trafficking can draw up to life; simple possession is lower. Law 54/2006 replaced the death penalty with life for drug offences; any residual capital exposure is limited to aggravated international-operation trafficking, not tied to a substance tier — barbiturates are not death-eligible by class.
- If prescribed or medical
- Phenobarbital is dispensed as a scheduled antiepileptic (a WHO Essential Medicine); the sedative-hypnotic barbiturates are tightly controlled.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription and original packaging; declare controlled medicines.
