Is Ayahuasca legal in Finland?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified September 16, 2026
Legal status
Controlled in Finland. An intoxicating DMT-containing ayahuasca preparation is expressly a narcotic; the brew name alone does not prove DMT content, and a medicinal Peganum harmala preparation has a separate conditional herbal-medicine route. The instrument and provision are 373/2008 §3(1)(5)(d); 543/2008 Annex II list I and IV; 230/2025 Annex 2, and the list entry reads, in the Finnish of the instrument itself: “huumaantumistarkoituksessa käytettäviä kasvijauheita, -rouheita ja -valmisteita, jotka sisältävät dimetyylitryptamiinia”; “Dimetyylitryptamiini (DMT)”; “Peganum harmala”
Consequences if caught
Narcotics offences are prosecuted under the Criminal Code (39/1889) chapter 50, with the substantive prohibitions in the Narcotics Act 373/2008 section 5 and the lawful exceptions in section 3. The consumer market conduct offence for psychoactive substances banned from the consumer market sits in Criminal Code chapter 44 section 5a. No custodial term figures are asserted in this cell: the research behind it recorded the provisions and the listing, and did not record the sentencing ranges, so quoting one here would be an invention rather than a reading.
If prescribed or medical
Where a substance is a medicinal ingredient rather than a listed narcotic, it is handled through the Medicines Act 395/1987, in particular the conduct and import rules in section 3 and the medicinal substances list, and its status turns on individual product classification.
Documentation
Carry any prescribed medicine in its dispensed packaging with the prescription. Finland's personal import rules for medicines sit in the Medicines Act 395/1987 and were not read for this cell, so no traveller allowance is stated here.
