- Selling or supplying phenibut when it is not a lawfully prescribed medicine breaches the Medicines Act; because it is not a Misuse of Drugs Act controlled drug there is no drug-possession offence, but unauthorised sale of an unapproved/prescription medicine is an offence.
- If prescribed or medical
- Phenibut is available only on a doctor's prescription as a prescription medicine, consistent with Medsafe's treatment of the gabapentinoid class.
- Documentation
- Lawful supply requires a prescription, so over-the-counter 'supplement' sale is not permitted and personal importation is constrained by prescription-medicine rules; individual purchase routes are left to confirmation.
