Confirmed legal status
7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)
- Legal status
- 7-Hydroxymitragynine, a kratom alkaloid, is controlled together with the plant (no separate isolate carve-out) as a constituent of kratom, which is prohibited under the 1993 Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law; 7-OH is not separately named — its individual listing is left to confirmation, and the drug-specific capital-trafficking tier is likewise left to confirmation.
- Consequences if caught
- Possession or supply of a prohibited narcotic draws imprisonment; arrests and product destruction have been reported.
- If prescribed / medical
- No lawful medical route — kratom and its alkaloids are prohibited with no legal medical framework.
- Documentation
- No lawful personal-import route; there is no legal export or carry framework for kratom.

Adderall
- Legal status
- Adderall (mixed amphetamine salts) has no separate legal identity — it is regulated AS amphetamine: notified controlled psychotropic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993 (SLORC 1/93, amended 2018).
- Consequences if caught
- Possession multi-year; s.20 makes production/distribution/sale/import/export of a controlled psychotropic punishable by 15 years to DEATH (discretionary). Amphetamine is a notified psychotropic, so capital exposure applies — treat as high-risk (post-2021 enforcement is opaque).
- If prescribed / medical
- Prescription stimulant via strictly controlled medical channels; carrying it without a local permit/prescription risks arrest.
- Documentation
- Myanmar (a Golden Triangle state and a top opium and methamphetamine source) controls drugs under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993 (SLORC Law No. 1/93, in force 27 January 1993), administered by the Central Committee for Drug Abuse Control. Production, distribution, sale, import or export (Sec 20) draws a minimum of 15 years to unlimited imprisonment OR death; possession or trafficking for sale (Sec 19) draws 10 years to unlimited; cultivation, processing or transport (Sec 16) draws 5–10 years plus a fine. A 'limitation of weight' deems possession at or above set amounts to be possession-for-sale (trafficking): 3 g of heroin, 3 g of morphine, 3 g of monoacetylmorphine (with combined thresholds). For cannabis, user possession draws 3–5 years plus mandatory treatment; 2–75 g is treated as possession with intent to sell; distribution, sale, import or export draws 15 years to unlimited and is death-eligible; cultivation draws 5–10 years. [retained; death available for trafficking but largely not enforced — mass commutation 2014] The death penalty is available for trafficking (Sec 20), but it is largely not enforced: President Thein Sein commuted all death sentences to life in January 2014, and drug executions are not a current practice (Myanmar resumed some executions in July 2022, but for political prisoners, NOT drugs). Carry any controlled medicine with its prescription and confirm requirements with your embassy before travel.

Alcohol
- Legal status
- Legal — alcohol (ethanol) is a licensed beverage, not a controlled drug; retail governed by liquor-licensing rules.
- Consequences if caught
- No penalty for adult consumption; unlicensed sale is an excise/liquor-law offence.
- If prescribed / medical
- n/a — a beverage, not a medicine.
- Documentation
- Sold at licensed shops, hotels and bars; no traveller permit required.

Cathinone
- Legal status
- Controlled — cathinone (khat's natural principal alkaloid) is a 1971 Convention SCHEDULE I psychotropic and falls within the psychotropics annex of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law, which incorporates the UN conventions. Mechanism: 1971 Sch-I transposition (convention-mirroring), named. As the parent compound it is DISTINCT from the khat PLANT (Catha edulis, not separately named) and from the synthetic cathinones (mephedrone etc.) that derive from it; cathinone is the named Sch-I alkaloid, cathine the milder metabolite (1971 Schedule III). Capital reach is left to confirmation — drug-specific capital thresholds are opaque under current governance.
- Consequences if caught
- Controlled psychotropic: penalties apply for the alkaloid; capital exposure for cathinone is unconfirmable. High risk.
- If prescribed / medical
- 1971 Schedule I substance with no accepted medical use and no lawful prescription route for the isolated alkaloid.
- Documentation
- No licit personal-import route for a controlled psychotropic.

Crack Cocaine
- Legal status
- Crack is the freebase (base) form of cocaine and has no separate legal identity in Myanmar: it is controlled AS cocaine under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993, whose scheduling covers cocaine, its salts and preparations and thus reaches the base/freebase form. The law's capital provisions apply by weight and carry over to crack, so production, distribution, sale or import is punishable up to death whether powder or base.
- Consequences if caught
- Production, distribution, sale or import of crack (as cocaine) carries 15 years to unlimited imprisonment or death (Sec 20); possession/use is separately criminal.
- If prescribed / medical
- Cocaine has no recognised therapeutic use in Myanmar; the crack/freebase base has no medicinal preparation and cannot be prescribed.
- Documentation
- No prescription documentation exists for crack/freebase cocaine.

Distinct from cannabis, controlled under the same 1993 Law.
- Consequences if caught
- Illegal; user possession and trafficking penalties under the 1993 Law (imprisonment, mandatory treatment for users).

- Morphine is a scheduled narcotic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993 and is death-eligible: production, sale, import or export is punishable by 15 years to death under ss.20-21 (with a 3 g 'for sale' threshold under s.16(c)); the exact capital trafficking weight for morphine is left to confirmation. Executions resumed in 2022.
- Consequences if caught
- Unauthorised possession draws imprisonment; production, sale, import or export of morphine is death-eligible under ss.20-21.
- If prescribed / medical
- Handled as a scheduled controlled narcotic for severe and cancer pain where available.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription and original packaging; enforcement is unpredictable — confirm import rules before travel.

Oxycodone
- Legal status
- Oxycodone is a controlled narcotic under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993 (ss. 20–21) — a strong opioid; no oxycodone-specific capital weight is established, so the drug-specific capital tier is left to confirmation (executions resumed 2022).
- Consequences if caught
- Production/distribution/sale/import/export of scheduled narcotics is punishable by 15 years to an unlimited term or death (ss. 20–21); no oxycodone-specific capital weight is published — its capital exposure is left to confirmation.
- If prescribed / medical
- Handled as a controlled prescription narcotic; enforcement is unpredictable.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription and doctor's letter; controlled medicines are risky to carry — confirm before travel.

Pink Cocaine / Tusi
- Legal status
- Pink cocaine (tusi) is not scheduled as such; it is a variable mixture (typically ketamine + MDMA) prosecuted through its constituents — Myanmar prohibits MDMA under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law 1993, which reaches any preparation containing a controlled substance. Because the blend varies batch to batch, exposure follows the most-severely-controlled component, so an MDMA-containing tusi sample carries the 1993 Law's severe trafficking exposure.
- Consequences if caught
- An MDMA-positive mixture is a serious offence under the 1993 Law, where production, distribution, sale, import or export (Sec 20) carries 15 years to unlimited imprisonment and, for aggravated trafficking, death eligibility.
- If prescribed / medical
- No lawful supply of the mixture; MDMA has no accepted medical use, and ketamine, where present, is a controlled medicine.
- Documentation
- Sold as a party powder of unknown makeup; because the blend varies batch to batch, buyers cannot know whether MDMA is present, so severe legal exposure under the 1993 Law is unknowable at purchase.

Tramadol
- Legal status
- Tramadol is a controlled/prescription medicine governed by Myanmar's Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law (1993); its precise schedule listing is left to confirmation, and whether tramadol is charged at a capital level is undocumented, so the tramadol-specific capital tier is left to confirmation.
- Consequences if caught
- Unauthorised handling is punishable under the 1993 law; tramadol is heavily abused and widely seized, and enforcement is unpredictable.
- If prescribed / medical
- Handled as a controlled/prescription medicine.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription or doctor's letter; controlled medicines are risky to carry given unpredictable enforcement — confirm before travel.

Drug laws and enforcement change and vary by country. This is not legal advice. Always confirm with the destination’s embassy or official drug authority before traveling; penalties can be severe, including imprisonment.
Before you travel
Verify current rules with the destination country’s official drug authority and your own country’s embassy before traveling. Find the destination’s U.S. embassy & official country guidance →
Non-U.S. travelers: check your own government’s travel advisory and embassy.
If you’re detained or arrested abroad
Contact your own country’s embassy or consulate in the destination immediately — not the destination’s authorities. U.S. citizens: contact the nearest U.S. embassy/consulate and the U.S. State Department at +1-202-501-4444 (from abroad). If a U.S. citizen is arrested or detained abroad →
