Is Methaqualone (Quaaludes) legal in Grenada?

Legal status

Controlled. It is listed in Part II, the list of psychotropic substances of the First Schedule to the Drug Abuse (Prevention and Control) Act, Chapter 84A. Possession is an offence and carries the same maximum as trafficking.

Consequences if caught

The First Schedule entry is 'METHAQUALONE'. The Fifth Schedule sets the punishments under section 37, and every offence in it carries the same figures. Having possession of a controlled drug under section 6(2), production under section 5(2), supplying or offering to supply under section 5(3), importation or exportation under section 4(3), cultivation of cannabis under section 11(2), handling under section 7(1) and the rest all carry, on summary conviction, a fine of 250,000 dollars or imprisonment for 5 years or both, and on conviction on indictment a fine of 500,000 dollars or imprisonment for 20 years or both. Grenada does not graduate the penalty by substance at all. There are no drug classes in this act: the First Schedule sorts substances into narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and listed substances, and none of those categories appears in the punishment table. Nor does the act graduate by conduct, because possession and trafficking carry the same maximum. Section 21 creates a separate offence of having a controlled drug in possession in or within a radius of one hundred yards of any school premises. Section 3(2) provides that the Minister may by Order make such amendments to the First Schedule as may be necessary, so the printed schedule is not the whole answer and a substance may have been added by Order since the consolidation read here.
