Is Cannabinol legal in Antigua and Barbuda?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified September 16, 2026
Legal status
Controlled. It is a Class A drug in Part I of the First Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Act, Cap. 283. Possession is an offence.
Consequences if caught
The First Schedule entry is 'Cannabinol, except where contained in cannabis or cannabis resin'. The schedule is printed in two columns, so the class is stated from the entry's position within Part I, II or III rather than from the line it shares with a neighbouring column. The Second Schedule sets the punishments under section 25. Having possession of a controlled drug carries, on summary conviction, 2 years and a fine of not less than 5,000 dollars and not exceeding 200,000 dollars, and on conviction on indictment 7 years and a fine for a Class A or Class B drug and 4 years and a fine for a Class C drug. Production under section 5(2) and supplying or offering to supply under section 5(3) each carry, on summary conviction, 2 years and a fine of not less than 20,000 dollars and not exceeding 500,000 dollars, and on indictment 7 years and a fine. Import and export offences under section 26 carry, on summary conviction, six times the value of the goods or between 20,000 and 200,000 dollars whichever is the greater together with 12 months, and on indictment an unlimited fine together with 10 years, with lower money figures for a Class C drug. The class decides very little here. Production, supply and possession carry the same figures for Class A, Class B and Class C, and the classes separate only on the indictment limb for possession and on the money figures for import and export. That is unlike the United Kingdom act this one is modelled on, where the class drives the whole tariff. Section 3(2) provides that the Minister may by Order make such amendments to the First Schedule or any part thereof as may be necessary, so the printed schedule is not the whole answer and a substance may have been added by Order since the consolidation read here. This placement is stated as at the consolidated text of Cap. 283 read on 16 September 2026, whose printed amendment list runs to 1989.
If prescribed or medical
Whether an authorised medicinal form exists in Antigua and Barbuda was not established here. Carry any prescribed medicine in its original packaging with the prescription.
Documentation
For a prescribed controlled medicine, carry it in its original pharmacy packaging with the prescription. Antigua and Barbuda is not in the Schengen area, so a Schengen certificate is not the relevant document and no local requirement was established here.
