- Buprenorphine is a controlled psychotropic under the Narcotics Control Act — a lighter tier than narcotic methadone; there is no agonist-maintenance OST system, and buprenorphine is not available for maintenance treatment (WHO OST medicines are obtainable only via special import).

- Illegal possession or use up to ~10 years or up to 100 million KRW.
- If prescribed or medical
- Not provided for maintenance opioid substitution; controlled treatment is abstinence-oriented, with any supply via KOEDC special import.
- Documentation
- MFDS advance import approval is required for a controlled substance regardless of amount; confirm before travel.
