Is Buprenorphine legal in Nigeria?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a controlled narcotic under Nigeria's NDLEA Act (Cap. N30) — a lighter tier than methadone; the NDLEA Act carries no death penalty, so it is non-capital.
Consequences if caught
Trafficking draws fixed terms up to life under the NDLEA Act — there is no death tier (the old capital drug provision was abolished, and a 2024 reintroduction bill was not enacted); buprenorphine is not death-eligible.
If prescribed or medical
Dispensed as a controlled prescription medicine with NAFDAC authorisation.
Documentation
NAFDAC import authorisation for controlled narcotics; carry prescription documentation.
