Is Buprenorphine legal in Cuba?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a controlled substance under Cuba's Penal Code (Law No. 151/2022) and MINSAP controlled-substance rules — a lighter tier than methadone; it is not individually named, and in practice prescribed/personal use is non-capital.
Consequences if caught
Base trafficking draws 4–10 years, but aggravated trafficking under Art. 235.2 is broadly worded and can reach 10–30 years, life, or the death penalty on paper — no opioid medicine is named as death-eligible and sentences are commuted under a de facto moratorium. Treat aggravated trafficking as carrying capital exposure on paper; prescribed/personal buprenorphine is non-capital.
If prescribed or medical
Handled as a controlled prescription medicine (MINSAP authorisation).
Documentation
MINSAP import authorisation for controlled narcotics; carry a prescription and original packaging.
