Is Buprenorphine legal in China?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified July 13, 2026
Legal status
Buprenorphine is a scheduled controlled opioid in China — internationally a 1971 Schedule III drug, a lighter tier than methadone; at therapeutic quantities it sits below the large-quantity capital tier, confirmed.
Consequences if caught
Unauthorised supply is prosecuted under Criminal Law art. 347 (graduated by quantity); the capital 'large quantity' tier is keyed to opium (≥1,000 g), heroin/methamphetamine (≥50 g) and morphine (~100 g) — therapeutic buprenorphine is below the death-eligible tier, confirmed.
If prescribed or medical
Controlled and prescription-only (used for opioid substitution).
Documentation
Declare controlled medicines and carry a prescription; unlicensed import is treated as smuggling.
