- Barbiturates are controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act (Cap. 27) — the class is scheduled at the lower classes (secobarbital and the barbiturate group in the Class C/D range), transposing the 1971 Convention as prescription-controlled substances.
- Consequences if caught
- Lower-class possession and trafficking draw imprisonment, fines and (for trafficking) caning. Brunei's death penalty (MDA Second Schedule) applies only to enumerated narcotics/ATS above weight — no barbiturate appears in any capital column, so they are not death-eligible.
- If prescribed or medical
- Phenobarbital is handled as a controlled antiepileptic (a WHO Essential Medicine); the sedative-hypnotic barbiturates are tightly controlled.
- Documentation
- Carry a prescription and original packaging; declare controlled medicines and confirm import rules with Brunei authorities.
