- Amyl nitrite is classified as a prescription medicine under New Zealand's Medicines Act 1981 (Medicines Classification), except when sold in circumstances complying with the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996 / Agricultural Compounds and Veterinary Medicines Act 1997 regime for cyanide paste used in vertebrate-pest control.
- Consequences if caught
- Selling amyl nitrite without a prescription or authorisation is an offence under the Medicines Act; this is a prescription-medicine control, not a Misuse of Drugs Act controlled-drug offence, so no controlled-drug criminal tier applies.
- If prescribed or medical
- Amyl nitrite (the specific compound, distinct from the consumer 'poppers' category) is available only on a doctor's prescription; from March 2020 Medsafe moved to treat amyl/alkyl nitrites as prescription medicines, and a patient may import amyl nitrite as an unapproved medicine with a prescription.
- Documentation
- No over-the-counter sale; amyl nitrite requires a prescription and pharmacist dispensing.
