Is 5-MeO-DMT (Bufo / Toad) legal in New Zealand?

- 5-MeO-DMT is controlled in New Zealand as a Class C controlled drug by operation of the controlled-drug-analogue provision of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975 — it is a structural analogue of DMT (a Class A drug), and analogues fall within Schedule 3 Part 7.
- Consequences if caught
- Importing, producing, supplying or possessing a controlled-drug analogue is an offence; Class C possession carries up to 3 months imprisonment or a fine, and dealing/supply up to 8 years.
- If prescribed or medical
- No recognised therapeutic use; a controlled-drug analogue is not available on prescription outside a Ministry of Health licence or approval.
- Documentation
- Not individually named; caught as a 'controlled drug analogue' (a substance with a structure substantially similar to a Class A/B controlled drug) under s2 and Schedule 3 Part 7 of the MDA 1975, DMT being the Class A parent.
