Are Poppers legal in Falkland Islands (UK)?

Confirmed against a primary sourceVerified October 4, 2026
Legal status
Poppers, the alkyl nitrites, are not controlled drugs in the Falkland Islands: no alkyl nitrite is named in the Schedule to the Misuse of Drugs Ordinance 1987, as at the consolidation in force from 10 April 2019.
Consequences if caught
Searches of the Ordinance text for nitrite and poppers returned 0 matches. Amyl, isobutyl, isopropyl and butyl nitrite are small esters of nitrous acid, outside every entry and structural limb of the Schedule. No supply restriction on intoxicating substances was found in the Crimes Ordinance 2014, searched for intoxicating and solvent. Every offence in sections 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the Ordinance turns on a controlled drug, so none of them applies to a substance the Schedule does not specify. Section 2(1) defines a controlled drug as «any substance or product for the time being specified in the Schedule». No other instrument in force that controls it was found: the legislation.gov.fk title searches for psychoactive, poisons and pharmacy return nothing, and the Medicines Ordinance 2006 has not been brought into force, its section 1(2) providing that it «shall come into force on a date or dates to be appointed by the Governor by Notice published in the Gazette». This is stated as at the legislation.gov.fk consolidation of the Ordinance in force from 10 April 2019, whose Schedule is the one substituted by S.R. & O. 20/2014 with effect from 23 December 2014. Section 2(4) lets the Governor by Order add a substance to, or remove one from, Parts 1 to 3 of the Schedule. No Misuse of Drugs Order appears in the Gazette indexes for 2023, 2024 or 2025 or in Supplements 1 to 16 of 2026, and the portal's title search for misuse returns only the Ordinance, the 1989 Designation and Regulations Orders, the 1997 Regulations Order and two 2022 instruments, neither of which amends the Schedule. This does not rule out a later Order.
If prescribed or medical
Not a controlled drug and not a medicine with a prescription route in the Falkland Islands, so there is no prescription rule to state.
Documentation
