Is Etizolam legal in Turkey?
- Legal status
- Etizolam is not confirmed as a controlled substance in Turkey and this row is a deferral rather than a finding. The dossier searched the Turkish term «etizolam» and the transliteration etizolam against the classification decisions made under article 19 of Law No. 2313 on the Control of Narcotic Substances, confirmed no current entry, and rejected the near match «alprazolam», because the thienodiazepine is not alprazolam. Etizolam differs from the other benzodiazepine rows in this corpus in a way worth recording. The dossier's class row for benzodiazepines names five controlled members, alprazolam, clonazepam, diazepam, lorazepam and nimetazepam, and omits etizolam entirely, although this corpus carries six benzodiazepine rows. The omission may be deliberate, since a thienodiazepine has a sulphur containing ring in place of the benzene ring and is not strictly a benzodiazepine at all, or it may be an oversight; the dossier does not say. Both readings are recorded here and neither is adopted.
- Consequences if caught
- Capital exposure: none. No article in this chain carries a capital or whole life route, and no per-substance threshold was verified for this row. If a classification decision names etizolam, the ceiling is 30 years under article 188(1) of Penal Code No. 5237, article 188(3) sets not less than ten years for selling, giving to another, dispatching, transporting, storing, purchasing, accepting and possessing, and article 191(1) sets two to five years for possession for use. If no decision names it, the route would be article 188(6), which applies the trafficking paragraphs to any substance whose sale depends on a prescription written by an authorised physician and which produces a narcotic or stimulant effect, while allowing the sentence to be reduced by up to half. Etizolam is a licensed medicine in some countries and a research chemical purchase in others, and which of those two descriptions fits a given tablet bears directly on whether the prescription limb of 188(6) is even arguable.
- If prescribed or medical
- There is no confirmed Turkish prescription route for etizolam. It is licensed in Japan, India and Italy but the dossier identified no Turkish marketing authorisation and carried no prescription instrument for this row, so no per-substance medical route is asserted here and the question is for the TİTCK. The distinction that matters is between a tablet dispensed by a pharmacy against a prescription in a country where the medicine is licensed and a tablet bought online from a research chemical vendor, because only the first could engage the prescription limb of article 188(6) at all, and neither makes the medicine Turkish.
- Documentation
- If etizolam was lawfully prescribed abroad, carry it in its original dispensing packaging with the prescription and a prescriber's letter naming the patient, the active ingredient, the dose and the treatment period, and obtain the TİTCK position before travelling, since a medicine unlicensed in Turkey is a harder conversation than a controlled one. Material bought without a prescription cannot be documented at all. The search log was read in the dossier on 18 September 2026, the class row's omission of this member was read at the same time, and article 188(6) was read from the consolidated Penal Code on 20 September 2026.
- Turkey, Law No. 2313 on the Control of Narcotic Substances of 12 June 1933, articles 19 and 24, with the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237, articles 188(1), 188(3), 188(6) and 191(1)
- the consolidated texts were read at https://www.mevzuat.gov.tr/mevzuatmetin/1.3.2313.pdf (HTTP 200, 220,153 bytes) and https://www.mevzuat.gov.tr/mevzuatmetin/1.5.5237.pdf (HTTP 200, 1,070,143 bytes), both fetched on 20 September 2026. The dossier's own url column holds one identical string for all 88 Turkey rows and that string is these two addresses run together with no separator, so the citation it supplies is document level rather than per substance. The annexes to the ten decisions footnoted to article 19 are not reproduced in the consolidated statute and were not read.
