Ego death

'Ego death', also called ego dissolution, is a temporary loss of the ordinary sense of self — the feeling of being a distinct individual separate from the world. It is most associated with high doses of classic psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, DMT, mescaline) and dissociatives, and is reported in some meditative and near-death experiences too. People describe it in varied ways: a dissolving of boundaries between self and surroundings, a sense of unity or merging with everything, or the unsettling feeling that the self has disappeared or 'died'. It is a subjective psychological phenomenon, not literal death and not permanent — the sense of self returns as the drug wears off. For some it is described as among the most meaningful experiences of their lives; for others it is deeply frightening.

Ego death is a psychological experience rather than a physical danger in itself, but it carries real risks worth understanding before it happens unexpectedly. The central risk is acute psychological distress: encountering the dissolution of one's sense of self without warning or preparation can trigger intense fear, panic, and a feeling of losing one's mind or dying, which — especially in an unsafe setting — can lead to dangerous, impulsive behavior during the experience. For people vulnerable to serious mental illness, profoundly destabilizing experiences like this may precipitate or worsen psychiatric episodes. A frightening or poorly-supported ego-death experience can also be genuinely traumatic, occasionally leaving lasting anxiety or difficulty reintegrating afterward, though many people integrate even difficult experiences positively with time and support. The factors that most shape whether this goes well are the same as for any intense psychedelic experience: dose (higher doses make it more likely and more overwhelming), mindset, environment, and having a trusted sober presence — see the set-and-setting page. Resisting or panicking tends to intensify distress, whereas preparation and a safe container help. This is not a reason for reassurance that psychedelics are safe — high-dose experiences are unpredictable — but the ego-death experience itself is temporary. If someone is in severe distress, panicking, or a danger to themselves during such an experience, provide calm reassurance in a safe quiet space, and seek emergency help if they cannot be kept safe.
